Let's Get to Know Each Other!

  • Hello, my name is Joan Margaret Bernadette Segrue Nichols - yup that's a mouth full! My friends and family call me Joan.
  • I am a Creative Entrepreneur, Artist, Trauma Informed Yoga Educator, and Adjunct Professor.
  • I have shown my work  nationally at acclaimed Art Museums in the USA.
  • I am a wife and a mother, which are my favorite jobs!
  • I am most at home when I am creating in the art studio, on a yoga mat or in the kitchen.
  • I absolutely adore color and as a result express myself quite well with it.
  • I collect quotes, one of my recent favorite's being: "My joy grows when I bring joy to others."
  • Painting, yoga and meditation keep me balanced and kind.
  • My three favorite words are Joy, Absolutely and F#%$! (Bet you weren't expecting that last one, which I save only for very special occasions - lol).
  • I love reading while sipping tea... unless it is after 5:00pm then a nice Chardonnay or hoppy beer fits the bill.
  • PBS is my favorite channel, Michael Franti, Bono/U2 and Mozart are my favorite musicians, and I love the color pink!
  • My personal mantra is: "Always err on the side of kindness!"

Joan’s favorite themes to paint are landscapes and florals. “I would describe my style as a blend of impressionist and expressionistic art that leads the viewer to a place of joy and tranquility!” Joan also brings this sense of joy and mindfulness to her work as a surface pattern designer.
  • Joan has recently returned from Italy where she studied with Master Impressionist Artist Jerry Fresia.
  • Along with being a fine artist, Joan is  a Trauma Informed Yoga Educator and Trainer of more than 22 years, an Adjunct Professor and Entrepreneur. Acrylic paints, which I  like best, have a vibrancy that I enjoy. Plus with their quick drying characteristics, it  allows me to create pure color combinations without getting ‘mud’ which can happen with slower drying paints.” She chooses to paint mainly on watercolor paper for its texture, feel and the way the paper handles acrylic paints. “For me, my love of paper began when I was a graphic designer working with printers.”

  • Joan Margaret is  inspired by nature, brilliant colors and random acts of kindness. She began painting as a way of self-care to bring joy back into the center of her life. As a Trauma Informed Yoga Educator and Trainer working with high-risk youth, Joan realized she needed to be sure she took care of herself, so she could be fully present and of service to her students, and that is what painting does for her. Mindfulness is a way of life for Joan, that enriches her work as an artist. “By being mindful, I am able to use all my senses to soak up the experiences of nature, like hearing the song of a bird early in the morning, witnessing the explosion of colors during a sunset, smelling freshly mowed grass or feeling the air gently brush against my skin. I am able to capture the joy nature creates, and bring it forward through my art and yoga teaching . And like random acts of kindness, my hope is simply to shed a little light into someone’s day.”
